Contrast And Color – Beautiful Exotic Quartzite Kitchen With Full Height Splash
Every time we get the opportunity to do something exotic and special we get extra excited. One of our well respected contractors came to us with this project and eyebrows were raised when we heard the material selections for this newly renovated kitchen. The countertops were to be replaced with a brand new island. The customer selected Azurite quartzite for the island and a hand hammered copper farm style sink (front apron). For the perimeter of the kitchen they selected Taj Mahal Quartzite and chose to do full height splash.
Some time after the laser template was made on site we determined the total amount of material needed to fit the project. When the material arrived to our slab yard we got excited. Just So pretty. Natural stone countertops have so much character and we were thrilled to get moving on this kitchen countertop fabrication project. The job needed to be fabricated and installed in two phases to get the sizes exact for the full height backsplash. This is fairly standard when the scale and size of the material is so exact and the material is very limited so the procedures protect from errors when no more can be ordered. When a customer hand picks an exotic slab because of the nature of natural stone, the very next slab from the same lot from the same quarry can be drastically different and just not feel as good to the customer.
We consult with the customer to ensure that their vision is realized. To do this effectively we use camera’s and CAD software to plot out the piece(s) to be cut on the slab and go over where each end would be placed so they can get a better look and feel for how it will look in place. For this project they wanted the lighter side on the sink side. This gives a great fade from dark to the lighter beige Taj Mahal quartzite in the perimeter of the kitchen.
This also allows us to match the veins or movement on the splashes and for the overall kitchen look. Our installers on first pass then took measurements where to put the outlet receptacle holes and notch sides where the upper cabinets meet the wall above the kitchen countertops. These measurements come back to the shop and are overlaid onto the remnant pieces of Taj Mahal Quartzite for these countertops.
The full height backsplash are then cut to size and receptacles, holes, and/or notches are placed and cut. Sides are then profiled and polished as required by the project as needed. The next scheduled day the installation technicians arrive to the jobsite in this case they were running just a bit behind but communicated with the end customer and let them know. After installing and gluing down pieces etc… At long last this project came together favorably. Most of all the customer is happy. On to the next one!
